Young Leaders of the Decade Leadership Service Award

The Tavis Smiley Foundation’s Youth to Leaders program is pleased to announce the Smiley 100 Young Leaders of the Decade leadership service award. Since its inception the Youth to Leaders program has worked to identify and train the next generation of leaders. Each year the program honors those leaders who have demonstrated stellar achievement in leadership and service.
In recognition of the its 10th anniversary, the Tavis Smiley Foundation would like to honor 100 hometown young leaders from Southern California who exemplify and embody the spirit of our mission to enlighten, encourage and empower.

Who is eligible?
|
|
|
High school and middle school students between the ages of 13-18 who reside in Southern California are eligible. Nominees must have had a significant impact through the acts of leadership and service and have exhibited creative leadership, courage, conviction and consistent commitment to a cause, project or issue.

|
What is the criteria?
|
|
|
Individuals, businesses, nonprofit leaders, community and church organizations, teachers, social workers, mentors can nominate a young person whose dedication to leadership and service has a profound impact on their neighborhood, family, community, school, city, or state. Nominees cannot be related to the nominator. One entry per household.

What is the cost?
|
|
|
There is no cost for nominees or winners to participate.
|
|
|
Nomination Process
|
|
|
Nominators can submit a 400 word maximum recommendation on their student candidate online at the Tavis Smiley Foundation’s official website. Nominators are responsible for receiving parental consent for the nomination of their candidate and providing it to the Tavis Smiley Foundation.

|
|
Contest Period
|
|
|
The nomination period runs June 20 – August 20. Only winners will be notified by August 30, 2009.
|
|
|
Salute to Youth Leadership Benefit
|
|
|
Winners will receive their award at the 9th Annual Salute to Youth Leadership Benefit on Oct. 3, 2009 in Los Angeles.
|
|
|
Selection Panel
|
|
|
A selection panel comprised of TSF staff, volunteers, and partner organizations will select the winners. All decisions of the panel are final.
|
